McDonald’s applied to Sutton Council on July 4 to turn the Poundland on Central Road in Worcester Park into a McDonald’s restaurant and takeaway.
If approved, McDonald’s would have a dining area with space for 25 people.
It would also create around 120 jobs, which McDonald’s “seeks to recruit from the local area”.
The proposal suggests making changes to the front car park as McDonald’s wants to add five spaces so motorcycles can deliver, and one space for accessible car parking.
It also wants to install six Sheffield cycle stands, which can hold 12 bicycles.
Timber planters are proposed to the front of the store and an automatic rising arm barrier is proposed.
All the rubbish would be stored and managed for recycling in large containers within the restaurant.
McDonald’s states that the project will “provide an active use on the site, creating jobs, vitality and viability to the town centre, whilst reusing an existing building, providing investment into the local area”.
However, some residents have submitted objections on the Sutton Council website to this application.
Dee Steed, a Worcester Park resident, said: “A McDonald’s by the traffic lights will prove dangerous and the area will be filled with Uber Eats mopeds and drivers.
“It will prove detrimental to the cafe, chip shop, kebab shop and pub too.
“Not needed in Worcester Park at all as theres are already Mc Donalds at Cheam and New Malden. Both deliver to Worcester Park.”
Louise Jankowicz, another Worcester Park resident, said: “We already have a major issue with traffic on our road.
“Directly out of our road and into Worcester Park.
“McDonald’s will only exacerbate the issue and the anti-social behaviour, littering in the streets and it will affect the many locally owned businesses we try to support.
“We do not support this here at all.”
In the application, the planners said: “Careful consideration has been given to the site history and previous scheme within the local area.
“Improvements have been made, with detailed highways analysis provided, alongside to provision of a dine-in restaurant and reduced opening hours.
“The design and layout of the proposal is appropriate in the area and it is considered a betterment to the existing building, bringing the unit into active use.
“In light of the above, we trust officers are able to support the application.”
