Hereford Register Office move: will your wedding be affected?

The register office will soon be moving from Hereford Town Hall to a new office next door at 8 St Owen Street, Herefordshire Council has confirmed.

The exact date of the move is yet to be confirmed, but a Herefordshire Council spokesperson said it is expected to take place in the second half of September in order to allow the library to relocate temporarily to Hereford Town Hall.

Hereford’s library has until now been housed in temporary accommodation in Friars Street, after being moved out of its old Broad Street home.

The Broad Street building, which also housed the city’s museum, is undergoing a transformation to become a state-of-the-art exhibition space.

Herefordshire Council’s new Conservative administration decided last year to make the Shirehall rather than the Maylord Orchards shopping centre the home of Hereford’s new library.

The neo-Classical building in the city’s St Peter’s Square has lain largely disused since part of its ceiling collapsed in 2020.

The council’s cabinet member for community assets said in October the new library is expected to open in June 2026.

Where should I register births and deaths?

All appointments to register a birth, death or stillbirth, as well as to give notice of marriage or civil partnership, will move to the new register office.

Will my wedding be affected?

If you have a marriage or civil partnership ceremony scheduled at the register office (a statutory ceremony), your ceremony will move to the new register office. The council spokesperson said all affected customers will be notified once there is a confirmed date for the move.

If you have a marriage, civil partnership or citizenship ceremony scheduled in the Oak Room at Hereford Town Hall, this will be unaffected and will take place in the Oak Room as planned.

Access to the new office will be through the side door. Take the path from St Owen Street down the side of the Town Hall towards the rear car park.
